Circle in the Sand Sunday 17th June 2007
Participants for the 2007 Circle in the Sand tournament scheduled for Bacton beach were greeted with an unscheduled high tide to the sea wall, but this soon subsided and play was able to commence just half an hour late at 11.30am.
The event attracted an entry of 16 pairs but it was disappointing that part of the Diss contingent failed to find the venue, the first time that such an occurrence has happened in many years of similar promotions.
It was noticeable that the bonus starts applied were of particular benefit to the young people involved with the lowest placed pair of Joshua Wilcox and Kyle Sanders (both cadets) recording an average loss of only 1.8 points per game despite the fact that they did not win a game and Kyle was playing in his first ever competitive tournament.
Also apparent was the fact that the ultimate winners Ted and Margaret Hamlin lost their first game to John Fisher and Curtis Money, who retained a 100% record until a last round defeat to the defending champions Dave Robinson and Bob Urquhart, which in effect relegated the Deopham Victoria 51 combination to fourth place.
At the conclusion the promoting Club Wanderers St Faiths claimed the top three placings with Ted and Margaret Hamlin first with 4 wins +31, Chloe Urquhart (cadet) and Lynne Urquhart second with 4 wins +26, Dave Robinson and Bob Urquhart third with 4 wins +24. John Fisher and Curtis Money (junior) of Deopham Victoria 51 finished fourth with 4 wins +7.
Pleasing to note that all present including Pete Griffiths and Sally Sadler from Bury St Edmunds appeared to thoroughly enjoy the event.

PIED PIPER PAIRS
Saturday 4th August 2007
Wanderers St Faiths Petanque Club benefited from the improved weather to attract a good entry for the annual Pied Piper Pairs competition primarily aimed at encouraging young people to participate in the sport.
Each was partnered by an experienced adult with bonus starts of +4 per minor (under 11) and +2 per cadet (under 14) applied. Juniors aged under 18 started from scratch.
It was expected that play would be of a high standard with many talented youngsters involved and only two not having played previously.
This proved to be the case for the duration of the timed thirty minute per game six round tournament, with the handicap system applied having the desired effect of assisting the younger participants.
The tournament commenced with two random draw rounds followed thereafter by a progressive format.
After four rounds only Edward Abery partnered by Wanderers St Faiths newest member Steven Reader were unbeaten.
Their Club colleagues Steven Garrido partnered by Dad Jose and the James Urquhart - Dave Robinson combination were their closest rivals at this stage on three wins. However it was still possible for any of the eleven pairs to win the competition including defending champions Glen Meredith and Graham Beales of Victoria 51 who were showing signs of recovering from an average start.
At the conclusion Edward Abery and Steven Reader emerged as winners despite a last round 9-13 loss to Glen Meredith and Graham Beales who finished second.
Other top ten places were determined by clashes between leading contenders and the opportunity for others to work their way through the field with a late run of successes. The closeness of the competition is confirmed by the fact that the points differential was plus fourteen for the winners compared to a plus four for the team placed fourteenth.
