Anglia Triples Championships

Sunday 13 August 2006 played at British Sugar PC Bury St Edmunds

7 Teams contested the Anglia Triples Championships played at the British Sugar Petanque Club. 5 of the Triples were ones that will be going to represent the Region at Brean in the Inter Regional Championships in september and they were taking the opportunity to gain some competitive play.

The surprise team of the day was the last minute entry of of Janet Taylor, Norman Guest & Michael Neal who despite having never played together before beat many of the more estabilshed and fancied teams including the previous years champions.

With the last round to play Janet, Derek & Michael were on 4 wins as was the Derek Shoesmith, Jerome Morais & Peter Astle triple and fittingly the last game was against each other to decide the outright winners.

Derek, Jerome & Peter were quick out of the blocks and built up an 11 - 0 lead before Janet, Norman & Michael rallied briefly but the deficit was to much to overcome with the former winning comfortably 13 -4 to take the title.

Results :

1. Derek Shoesmith, Jerome Morais & Peter Astle 5 wins +27 pts

2. Janet Taylor, Norman Guest & Michael Neal 4 wins + 7 pts

3. Brian Taylor, Ian Dabson & Paul Critten 3 wins + 9 pts

4. Kevin Moss, Lee Moss, Richard Marks 3 wins + 5 pts

Sisca Cassis Boules Challenge Finals

Saturday 2 September 2006 Battersa Park London

Two teams from the Anglia Region made the trip to Battersea Park in London to play in the finals of the Sisca Cassis Boules Challenge 2006. They were both in the 40+ category and were The Wheatsheaf (Tricia Harris; Pat Papworth & Adrian Whiting) from the Exning Petanque Club and JEDEPE (Jerome Morais; Derek Shoesmith & Peter Astle) from Norfolk. The start was delayed due to several teams not turning up having failed to notify the organizers in advance.

The morning session was played in leagues of 4 teams with the winners in each league going into the 'gold’ pool’ runners-up into ‘silver’; 3rd place into ‘bronze 1’ and 4th place into ‘bronze 2’. The leagues were a random draw which saw both our teams drawn in the same league. JEDEPE won their first 2 games and then lost the last one 13 – 12 to qualify for the silver pool, whilst the Wheatsheaf found things hard going and went into the bronze 2 league.

The afternoon session saw Wheatsheaf beat Barley Mow from West Midlands to get into the final of the Bronze 2 section there they lost to Crondall Gents from Surrey but won prize money of £60

JEDEPE won their first game in silver then came up against Ifield who comprised 1 current and 2 ex GB players and not surprisingly lost. Ifield went on to win the silver pool and JEDEPE won the play-off for silver’s third place by beating Ray & the Donny Dragons from Doncaster
