Anglia Singles & Shooting Championships

Sunday 9 July 2006 played at The Cottage Norwich

For the second successive week a competition was very poorly supported with only 4 players entering the Singles Championship . Because of the low entry it was decided that it would be played in a round-robin

format with everybody playing each other twice to give each player 6 games.

At the halfway point George Manchett was unbeaten with 3 wins, Jerome Morais 2 wins, Tony D'esposito 1, and Peter Astle on 0. The second part saw a complete reversal with every game going the opposite to the first time leaving every player having won 3 games and the result to be decided on points difference as follows

Peter Astle 3 wins +8 1st

Tony D'esposito 3 wins +3 2nd

Jerome Morais 3 wins +1 3rd

George Manchett 3 wins -12 4th

Jerome Morais won the Shooting Championships with a total of 18 pts

EPA Consultation Document 1

Please find attached the EPA Motion to the BPF on the International Qualify Series and other Playing Matters. At the EPA Congress the delegates asked that this should be sent to the regions and onwards to the membership before submitting to the BPF Congress. For final approval.

Due to the tight timescales I must ask you to do this urgently as we have to submit motions during the early part of August to the BPF. I therefore ask that you forward this to your players and committees and any feedback to be back to me by Friday 29th July.

Once again sorry for the short notice

Pied Piper Adult/Junior Competion

Sunday 2 July 2006 played at St Faiths

The Pied Piper Pairs competition is aimed at encouraging young people to participate in petanque and there was a good entry at the St Faiths.

Each youngster was partnered by an adult and a handicap system apllied by way of bonus starts for specific age groups This ensured some close encounters in a schedule of six thirty minute random draw rounds.

Entering the last round it was only possible for the Glen Meredith / Graham Beales and

Chloe Urquhart / Lynne Urquhart combinations to gain 5 wins. Neither were able to achieve a win and at the conclusion all participants had gained at least 2 wins and none more than 4.

This meant that had any one of the Joshua Wilcox / Mick Sadler; Chloe Urquhart / Lynne Urquhart;

James Urquhar t/ Mick Wicks; Allen Kemp / Andy Kemp or Edward Abery / Dave Abery pairs won another of their games they could have won the tournament.

As it was Glen & Graham had done just enough to win the event by the narrowest of margins

Top Placings

1. Glen Meredith & Graham Beale (Victoria 51) 4 wins +21

2. Joshua Wilcox & Mick Sadler (Wanderers St Faiths) 4 wins +19

3. Chloe & Lynne Urquhart (Wanderers St Faiths) 4 wins + 4

4. James Urquhart (Wanderers St Faiths) & Mick Wicks (Norwich) 4 wins - 1

5. Allen & Andy Kemp (Wanderers St Faiths) 3 wins 1 draw + 12

6. Edward & Dave Abery (Wanderers St Faiths) 3 wins 1 draw + 8

7. Joel Meredith & John Stone (Victoria 51) 3 wins + 9

8. Jessica & Derek Shoesmith (Wanderers St Faiths) 3 wins + 1

Circle in the Sand Report & Results Sunday 6 August 2006

Wanderers St Faiths Petanque Club's annual Circle in the Sand tournament held at Bacton beach attracted a good entry including last year's winners Keith Burgess and Glen Harcourt of Sprowston Sports and Social Club.

After two rounds only four pairs were undefeated and this was reduced to only two following the third round, during which the promoting Club's cadet pairing of James Urquhart and Christopher Garrido benefitting from a four point bonus start defeated the reigning champions 13-5.

The only teams with maximum wins clashed in the fourth round with the Norwich pairing of Janet and Brian Taylor forcing the pace until a late surge by Bob Urquhart and Dave Robinson of Wanderers St Faiths resulted in them achieving a 13-11 victory.

Entering the fifth and final round only the Urquhart-Robinson combination could boost maximum wins with four other pairings having lost just one game.

Sally Sadler and Peter Griffiths of British Sugar, Bury St Edmunds who lost their opening game 1-13 to Burgess-Harcourt bounced back into contention with a 13-6 victory over Roz Taylor and Richard Green of Norwich.

Daniel Shevlin and Tony Desposito of Sprowston Sports and Social Club were in the mix and probably achieved a record by winning their fourth round match in two ends thanks to a 1 point bonus start for Daniel's Junior status and two maximum six pointers. However their hopes were dashed when they lost 11-13 to Janet and Brian Taylor.

The final match of the day to be completed resulted in a 10-10 draw between last year's champions Burgess-Harcourt and Urquhart-Robinson, which proved to be sufficient to enable the latter to claim this year's title.
