Message From Mike Pegg re Age group definition for ESPOIRS

I have just returned from the CEP board meeting.

The FIPJP has re-defined the Espoirs age group, it is still described as 18-23.

But now they are saying “under 23”.

This means for this year (2007) the players must be born from 1985 to 1989.

I will make the necessary changes to the BPF rules for the Espoirs event, amend the poster and website.

Regards

Mike Pegg

RUSSELL HARRIS FUNS PAIRS HELD ON 13TH MAY 2007

Despite a bad weather forecast Wanderers St Faiths Petanque Club decided to proceed with the Russell Harris Fun Pairs and were rewarded with the presence of forty individuals, eighty percent of whom were from the home Club.

In an attempt to ensure close matches bonus starts of 4 per minor, 3 per cadet and 2 per junior or novice were awarded per game. Each participating pair also used their joker at registration for a double score bonus round.

The wisdom of this format was proven by the fact that the winners recorded an average score of 13-8, whilst the last placed matches were even closer with an average 9-13 score.

It was unfortunate that rain from start of third round spoiled proceedings to a certain extent and it was decided to finish at end of fourth rather than scheduled fifth round.

At conclusion the ultimate winners were Edward and Jonathan Abery of Wanderers St Faiths Petanque Club, who started each game with a plus six by reason of their young ages and finished with a full house of 5 wins plus 26.

They were closely followed by Ros Taylor and Richard Green of Norwich Petanque Club on 5 wins plus 24.

Despite also winning all of their five games with a plus 18 defending champions Glen Meredith and Graham Beales of Deopham Victoria were unable to retain their title and had to settle for third place on this occasion.

The next placed pairs with 4 wins were Natalie and David Abery of Wanderers St Faiths Petanque Club plus 25 and Dave Robinson and Lynne Urquhart also from the home club plus 15.

As well as proving to be an enjoyable fun event the tournament provided a further opportunity for the fourteen young people participating to compete on more equal terms than normal.
